Week 5 – with update

Itsy

This week will mostly be spent on rehearsals and a subsequent gig with The Reverends at the Summer Festival in Klaksvík. We have extra backup singers, a violinist, a pianist and more so that’ll be fun. Great people.

Hence, I won’t be overly focused on my regular goals, however playing a gig and rehearsing is most certainly part of the plan.

ToDo for week 5:

  1. Have fun rehearsing and playing at the Summer Festival in Klaksvík.
  2. Work on goal #89 (create track in home studio) if possible.
  3. Work on goal #91 by moving our savings together and figuring out how much we need per month (been using YNAB for several years so this should be easy).

– UPDATE –

  1. Have fun rehearsing and playing at the Summer Festival in Klaksvík. (done!).
  2. Work on goal #89 (create track in home studio) if possible. (didn’t find the time).
  3. Work on goal #91 by moving our savings together and figuring out how much we need per month (been using YNAB for several years so this should be easy) (done!).

Well, I got 2 out of 3, which is quite ok considering the amount of rehearsals we had. We had a great time playing playing at the Summer Festival. I’ll see if I can post a few pics if I get permission from the photographers. This sunday I spent maybe 2 hours on figuring out our finances and everything taken into account it looks like we’ll be purchasing a home here in Tórshavn—or perhaps in Velbastað or Hvítanes— in about 18 months or so, so that’s quite exciting.

Well, onwards onwards onwards. Week 6 coming up.

Implant

My friend, Einar Petersen, has written a scary, true to life tale and has started a kickstarter in order to get funding for a comic book version. In his own words:

When “democratic” governments operate with secret courts, intensive surveillance of their own citizens and for that sake everyone else in the world, and doing it all in the holy name of “security”.

When things are like that, then I believe there is reason to be very sceptic and deeply aware of the possibilities of the technologies that are being conceived and implemented can bring humanity, be they good or bad.

Tidbits the Elder

I won’t be including this week in my efforts to reawaken myself as I’ve been McJobbing my days away and ‘Ólavssøka’, the Faroese national holiday, begins today. I might be donning a national costume tomorrow, time will tell. My girlfriend has an insanely beautiful costume. I have to try to keep up.

We played Reiner Knizia’s Lord of the Rings board game for the first time earlier this week at this location:

One of the smallest houses in the Faroe Islands, I’m sure. My childhood friend, Gudmund, rents it. He’s a filmmaker and finished a music video just a few days ago. Check it out here.

Week 4 Review

I fared a little better this week despite continuing illness. My intentions last week were:
* Create – Cubasis Song or Home Studio: Two pieces with at least two instruments in each (value 50%). RESULT: Done, although it was a bit too “jammy” so it will require more work, so I’ll give it 40%. Feels good to making music again although I have an army of neurotic worries built up. Oh well, the brick walls are supposed to be there. I need to find out if I want it enough.

* Consider writing. (Value 15%). RESULT: I did. I mulled it over and decided that I want build up a habit of writing on a daily basis. I’ve entertained such a habit before, but when depression showed its beautiful face again it went down the drain along with many other things. So I’ve written a minimum of a 100 words per day lately. This is just to get me to sit down and get started and I usually write a bit more than that. No particular story yet, but I am actually having fun.

* Habits: Good Effort, Read, Move, Sleep, No Junk. (value 35%). I got approximately 21%. Read, Move and Sleep all well. The other two not so.

FINAL SCORE: 76% – Quite acceptable compared to last week. I’m still trying to find a better way of doing this and in the future I’ll focus more on goals than habits.

Week 3 Review – Medic, please.

Walk of IceWell, this week went great. Or not. In fact this was my worst week yet. I became sick on monday and I currently (It’s Friday, TG) have a fever, sore throat, I’m sweating like a pig and have absolutely no energy. The remainder of the week I’ll spend on helping my girlfriend prepare her 30th birthday, something I do gladly but it won’t leave much time to work on my stuff. On a positive note, I’m still reading fiction every day and my sleep habit is going well. My productive goals, not at all. Oh well, there’s next week, but “next week” won’t be there forever.

My illness gave me time for reflection, though, so I’ll be making some changes to this whole goal tracking thing. Simplification is in order.

Two good things happening in the very near future: Scrivener is finally coming to iOS and a new Star Trek movie will see the light of day. I much prefer the more cerebral television series which truly expanded my horizons as a teenager, but a bit of hollywood action painted in Trek is occasionally enjoyable.

My intentions for Week 3 were these:

  • Wellbeing – Sleep – Go to bed early enough for a potential 7-8 hours of sleep every night. (Success – managed it 6 out of 7 evenings)
  • Create – Make a good effort on a daily basis, using what time I have (habit) (No).
  • Create – Cubasis Song: Two pieces with at least two instruments in each. (No)
  • Wellbeing – Run twice this week (Certainly Not).
  • Wellbeing – Become a reader again II – Read some fiction every day (Success. Still reading).

So, my poorest week yet due to illness. I’ll give it approximately 20%. All I can do is try to do better.

Update: It’s now Monday and I’m still sick which means I’ll be doing things the light way this week.

Week 4:

  1. Create – Cubasis Song or Home Studio: Two pieces with at least two instruments in each (value 50%)
  2. Consider writing. Start now (schedule when? how often?). (Value 15%)
  3. Habits: Good Effort, Read, Move, Sleep, No Junk. (value 35%)

Mkay, let’s see if I can make it to 100% this week.

Faroese Rock History Book Thingy

I had a great time last Saturday when ‘Føroysk Rokksøga’ (a book of faroese rock history) was released. Me and Kristin from my first band Mold from 1992 played “Drive Me Over”. Great fun and people loved it. Here are some pictures of the other performers:

Week 2 Review – Damn you, Morpheus.

Well, this week went to shit, but some good things happened as well. The first three days went fine, I managed to work on my Cubasis project and various other stuff. However, due to early morning shifts at my job for two weeks straight combined with exceptionally poor sleep, I sort of crashed on the third day of this week. Seriously, I become strange when I’m sleep deprived for several days in a row. I am easily frustrated, become slightly paranoid and nothing, absolutely nothing, is any fun. So I did something which I do really really well: I crawled into a shell and started playing a useless android game. In Week 1 I learned the value of proper time management and if I’ve learned anything this week it’s the value of proper sleep.  So I’m taking steps to build up better sleeping habits in Week 3.

Results from last week:

  • Create – Make a good effort on a daily basis, using what time I have (habit) (Result: 3 out of 7 days)
  • Create – Cubasis Song – Three pieces with at least two instruments in each. (Result: just a tiny bit of work, no finished pieces).
  • Wellbeing – Run once this week. (habit – will grow) (Success!)
  • Wellbeing – Become a reader again – Read some fiction every day (habit) (Success! I’ve read some fiction every day and I am loving it).

So a fairly poor result this week, although I do congratulate myself for finally starting to run and becoming a reader again. On another positive note, Kristin and I performed an old Mold song at a “book release concert” last night. A book of Faroese rock history. People really seemed to enjoy our performance and there were talks of a reunion. We’ll see. Anyway, perhaps I’ll write a post about the event later if I find the time.

My intentions for Week 3:

  • Wellbeing – Sleep – Go to bed early enough for a potential 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Create – Make a good effort on a daily basis, using what time I have (habit)
  • Create – Cubasis Song: Two pieces with at least two instruments in each.
  • Wellbeing – Run twice this week.
  • Wellbeing – Become a reader again II – Read some fiction every day

Week 1 Review – Steady as she goes.

Week 1 Review – Steady as she goes.

HopWell, the first week has gone by. Overall, I’m ok with my performance since I wanted to start slow. I had a lot of work hours this week and a lot of nesty type projects to take care of, like putting up blinds, putting together a table, errands and whatnot. Your apartment is never as clean as when you’re writing your dissertation, as they say.

Now that I’m attempting to carve out extra time in my schedule, the value of proper time management and communication has never been more apparent to me. We’re a special needs family, including a 5-month old, so everyone is just sorta milling about themselves unless we plan. Thusly, I spent a morning checking out various organizing methods. I tested the family organizing apps Famjama and Cozi (what’s with these names?). Up until now we’ve been using a paper calendar, and although the family organizing apps were interesting, we ended up using Google Calendar which was the only tool which successfully allowed me to automate my work schedule which spans three weeks before it starts over.

So, how was my week? I’m glad you asked.

The first thing I did was to roughly define my projects:

  1. I’m writing a song in our bedroom studio.
  2. Second, I’ll create a Cubasis song. I’m often out and about and I recently purchased Cubasis for my Ipad (which my awesome girlfriend gave to me because she never used it, love you, hon) so I’ll put it to the test by making a whole song exclusively on Ipad. Cubasis is Steinberg Cubase’s baby sister and allows me to transfer any on-the-road projects into my studio, so we likes that quite a bit, innit?
  3. A (short) short story.

So, these were my intentions for the week gone by:

  • (Creative Work) 2 hours of project work – Done! Actually quite a bit more than two hours. I wrote a tiny short story (690 words) which turned out decent. I worked on the Cubasis tune, but didn’t really get anywhere and haven’t had time to begin the studio song. As stated in my last post, I’m going to move away from amount of hours and state more defined goals. I prefer tangible goals rather than aiming for x amount of minutes, which means nothing in itself.
  • (Wellbeing) Only eat junk and sugar on Saturdays (exception: when friends and family visit our vice versa) . Done! I’ve eaten quite a bit healthier this week. There were occasions when we had family over, but minimal sugar was involved on my part.

So I got 100% on my week. I realize it wasn’t much of a todo list, but it’s still better than I’ve managed lately due to depression.

My list for this week (week #2 – turning it up a notch):

  • Create – Make a good effort on a daily basis, using what time I have (habit)
  • Create – Cubasis Song – Three pieces with at least two instruments in each.
  • Wellbeing – Run once this week. (habit – will grow)
  • Wellbeing – Become a reader again – Read some fiction every day (habit)

Some elaboration:

  1. I want to work on a creative project every day. Of course, there will be days with 10-hour work shifts and sick kids at home where 5 minutes of project work will be acceptable, but there will also be days when I’ll have a lot of free time allowing me to do more substantial work, while also making time for family, other habits and moderate relaxation. I want to be able to say: I did the best I could today with the time given to me.
  2. Self-explanatory.
  3. I want to feel better, sleep better and have more energy in my life. Bonus: Running and hiking in Faroese wilderness. Going to aim for 3 times a week of running, hiking or dancing or similar.
  4. Previously I ploughed through several books per week. Now I don’t even manage a book per month. I seem to always choose what shuts off my mind the most, which happens to be video games and netflix. So my intention is to become a reader again. It’s my form of meditation and makes me focus like nothing else.

All righty, I’m off. Hopefully I’ll manage as well this week.

How Long Was I Out?  – Coma’s End

I’ve decided to add a bucket list and habit tracker to my blog. I’ve kept track of my goals since the early 90’s and have previously posted a few of them here, but this time around I’ll turn it into something more substantial. The reason being that for the past few years I’ve suffered from anxiety and depression for long periods of time. A state which has turned me into an aimless blob without any sense of direction or drive. There has always been an undercurrent of anxiety in my life, but lately it has really tightened it’s grip, reducing me to someone who’ll sit and absorb ungodly amounts of netflix episodes or play hours upon hours of console games. Anything to take my mind of my mind, I suppose. My current state is a far cry from the Nic who used to read endless books, pound away at the piano, write songs in a state of euphoria and flow, write short stories and release albums. I find little joy in anything except my family and the fact that I’m fairly good at my job and feel like I’m making a difference, however small. For those things I’m very grateful but on the creative and ambitious side nothing comes naturally anymore. Thus it’ll take commitment and hard work and me publically declaring my intentions will hopefully make me work even harder. Of course, it won’t be that public since no one visits this site and I don’t exactly go out of my way to advertise it.
My method will most likely change over time but for now I’ve decided to start small with some habit building. Later I’ll add larger projects and more bucket list type items. I’ve decided to check in once a week.

For Week 1 (this week) I’ll focus on:

  • Project Work – 2 hours I realize that two hours of project work in one week is temporal chump change, but I want to start small and my current work week is pretty hectic. Of course, just putting in hours does not necessarily finish a project, so I’ll add some named projects with deadlines later on. Projects might include songs, short stories… anything creative.
  • Only eat junk food/sugar on saturdays. This is a pact my girlfriend and I made recently in order to become slightly healthier individuals. Exception: When we’re having friends over or the other way around.

So that’ll be the first step of my journey, hopefully I’ll get to those 1000 miles and beyond. Looking forward to add some running, reading, writing and jamming. I’ll also focus on shipping… getting my stuff out there.
